Mindful eating

‘Let food be your soul’

Incorporating the focus on our actual thoughts and feelings in one’s daily eating habits is when could be termed as “Mindful Eating”.

There is a growing field of people adapting to the approach of mindful eating and stepping out of the artificial web of what one ‘should’ eat. In order to adhere to the outside forces we often intend to lose touch with our ability to serve our bodies and provide them with what they need. Mindful eating is not a diet or a plan to follow, it’s about one’s journey from choosing what to eat, when to eat and how to eat.

Since the world around us is more about the ongoing chaos, nowadays people are left with no time to bother about their bodies and especially their eating habits. Including the questions of what, when and why, it is high time that one needs to focus on ‘how’ to go about when we talk about eating habits.

Comfortable and suitable eating are the sub headings to Mindful. But it doesn’t only mean eating nutritious food. It means eating when our body tells us to and not our mind. Ditching the habit of gulping down the food in a rush, eat, slow and steady, three meals a day, digesting and savoring the food. It is more about digesting it in a time which lets your body & mind know the signals.

Often our mind and emotions play a role in our eating habits. Whether we feel sad, happy, or mostly bored, we tend to incline towards eating something or the other to overcome that emotion. Also, when we pick something healthy to eat, our mind thinks to compensate it with junk. This is when you should be careful about your mind playing tricks.

Getting distracted due to your screen, or having trouble eating inadequate amount. Just remove the distractions and try to take one step at a time. Decide Mindful Eating once a day, or once a week to start with. And gradually take over.

This not only manages your weight, or keeps you fit, but also brings discipline in your routine. It keeps you and your body fit, removes unhealthy food behaviour patterns, binge eating, and overeating. It focuses on enjoying your food, your present moment and your life.

Think positive and fresh thoughts while eating. Think of it as a gratitude meal you have received. Try making it a healthy habit. Enjoy the process from selecting the type & quantity, the time you chew it, and till the digestion.

The concept of mindful eating is quite in the air and is required to be promoted in order to encourage the notion of enjoying the food we eat as nothing is more blissful and beautiful in itself.
